Idling Reporting with Vehicle Tracking

It is common knowledge that an idling vehicle is using fuel.  The engine has to run off of something, and since most engines are still using fuel that means the engine is using the fuel to keep the car idling when a driver does not shut it off.  Excessive idling can be a problem for fleet companies.  Diesel fuel is typically more expensive than regular car fuel.  Companies may pay out thousands of pounds each year that is unnecessary, but there is little they can do to track the idling unless they install a vehicle tracking system.

Vehicle tracking systems have alerts built in to the device on the truck, which relays information to the data centre. This information is then given to the fleet manager to analyse where excessive idling occurred.  Fleet management can even set up the alerts or just generate a report when they need it at the end of the month.

This information can be used to inform the management to allow them to find a solution to the problem.  The solution will vary depending on the company and of course the number of offenses the driver has regarding the issue.  Most often the management team works to lower the idling times by asking the driver to turn the vehicle off when they will be stopped for long periods of time.  The idling reports will also need to coincide with times that the driver is in traffic jams.  By using the reports and finding a solution the company can lower their costs and increase their profits.  It may also allow for drivers to get the raises they deserve since the money will not be wasted any longer on idling.

As more and more companies begin to use vehicle tracking for their fleets the average idling time will be lowered.  This means that all fleets will be helping the environment as well as saving their company money.  Many issues fleet companies have with wasting money can be solved with vehicle tracking.  Insurance premiums for example are often lowered due to the lower risk the tracking offers.  Recovery of stolen vehicles, less driver risk and much more can help save money and make the journey more efficient for all drivers of the fleet company.
