Car Tracking Devices

Typically when we hear about tracking devices we think about GPS in our mobile phones, fleet tracking devices, and luxury cars that have some sort of GPS signal you can activate if it is stolen.  All of this is very true.  We have passive and active tracking devices for assets, people, and cars.  Car tracking devices can be similar to fleet tracking systems depending on how much you want to spend.

When you purchase a car from a dealership most of them will now come equipped with a passive tracking device.  The device can be switched on by the GPS network company to find the car if it is stolen; however, most of the tracking devices are turned off until they are needed.  Insurance companies are requiring that more and more luxury cars come standard with some type of car tracking option.  The risk to the high priced cars being stolen is high, thus the insurance company requires the tracking to help recover the car.

You can also purchase a car tracking device to be placed in your car that has more options.  Navigation GPS systems where you have a map that you can input your point of departure to your arrival destination also come equipped with GPS tracking devices.  To tell you your position the system must talk with the satellite to get your longitude and latitude.  This same information can be relayed to a GPS network to track where your car is moving.

With the more complicated car vehicle devices you are able to get alerts sent to your phone when the car is out of reach, has moved when it should not be going anywhere, and it can help relay emergency information.  For example you may be in an accident, confused, and in need of help.  Certain car tracking devices have the option of a SOS or panic button.  The button can be hit to provide the network with your information, which in turns sends the information to the emergency centre.  An ambulance and help can then be dispatched to help you out.

If you have a fleet of cars as part of a rental service or business you might consider opting for car tracking devices that also send alerts about excessive idling, driver ID information, routes, and mileage usage.  Typically fleet tracking systems will have more options to help you run your company.  If you are an individual wishing to track your car in the event it is stolen then you will want to look at a simpler car tracking device.

As companies work on the technology of car tracking devices they are becoming more affordable.  It could be very soon that every new car will have the GPS installed without it being an additional option.  For now the luxury cars come equipped with GPS, but most inexpensive cars require that you pay to have the GPS installed.  Your insurance company will provide you with discounts if you have the car tracking devices installed because it reduces the risk to them.
