GPS Real Time Tracking

If you own a fleet of vehicles or you want to protect your personal vehicle there are GPS devices that you can use.  GPS stands for global positioning system, which refers to the satellites in space that can relay information back to earth from a data signal sent to the satellite via the tracking device.  GPS real time tracking is one method of vehicle tracking.

In GPS tracking you have active and passive systems.  A passive system is going to send signals at designated times and the information must be downloaded.  The active system or real time tracking provides you with a signal all of the time.  To get the information you just need to be logged onto the network.

Let’s take a look at an example: You have twenty fleet vehicles all out on deliveries.  At your depot you have a large computer screen with a map.  On the map there are little dots with names or numbers that tell you what vehicle the dot represents.  The dot that shows up on the map gives you the longitude and latitude of the vehicle’s location. If the vehicle is on the move the GPS will be tracking it to approximately 3 metres of its actual location.  The vehicle you are watching will show changes at specific intervals.  You may set up the active system to send a signal to the GPS satellite every three to five minutes.  If the vehicle moves then the location will see a slight change.

Real time tracking can relay more information than the passive systems because you are getting when it happens.  A good example would be a vehicle parked on your lot in the wee hours of the morning.  This vehicle suddenly moves off the lot, but it is not scheduled to go anywhere for the next two hours.  An alert is sent to your mobile phone, email, and home phone.  You get the alert and try calling the driver scheduled for the vehicle and the other staff.  However, you know from the driver ID that the car has actually been stolen.  Depending on your real time tracking system you may be able to shut the car off, but you will most definitely be able to tell the police where it is heading.  As the vehicle continues to move you can provide accurate intelligence to the police.  They can also log in to their system and pull up the vehicle.

In many of the new systems a tracking device is coming equipped with an override option that allows you to stop the vehicle in motion when it has been stolen.  This technology is still new so it is a little more expensive than other options.

Along with tracking a stolen vehicle you are able to receive excessive idling reports, mileage usage reports, work hour reports, and much more.  You can also provide location information to a driver, improve your customer service, and keep in contact with your drivers with more regularity because the system will be relaying data to you.
