Value of Asset Tracking

An asset by definition is something you value.  In a fleet company or other business an asset could be a person, vehicle, or package.  When discussing asset tracking devices most people are referring to items they are shipping or handling rather than a person or vehicle.  However, the asset tracking device that will be discussed here is the same type of system one can use on vehicles or people.

An asset tracking device works with GPS to send a signal from the tracking unit to the satellite and back to the tracking centre.  Not all asset tracking devices will use GPS, but these are the most common systems available today.  The other system is passive in which you can log in to get the signal of the device as long as it is turned on and it uses radio signals.

Any time your company has a delivery that is important you may want to use the asset tracking.  The device is placed on the storage container or in the container depending on what is being shipped.  There are many benefits for using asset tracking, which we will discuss below:

  1. You are actually tracking the container.  By tracking the container the shipment is in like the pallet, box, or other shipping container you will know if and when the goods are moved from the delivery truck.
  2. Since you can track the movement of the assets you can tell if they have been stolen or delivered to the correct address.  It will help you manage your assets better.
  3. The asset tracking system also reduces risk regarding the goods.  Being able to track the container movement if it is stolen helps the police find where the container is.  You and your company will also receive alerts regarding any unauthorised movement of the assets.
  4. Asset tracking will also help you learn what your employees are doing, help with customer service, and increase your management abilities regarding shipments.

Sometimes employees take a longer route or they stop before making the delivery.  With a GPS asset tracking device you know if there is a stop of the goods.  You can also log in to the system to tell your customer exactly where the goods are and the expected delivery time.  You can let the customer know if the delivery will be on time, if they are stuck in traffic, or had any other issues.  It also helps with increasing your management of staff because you have a record of what the driver was up to.

There are different systems out there for asset tracking.  Some systems will have more benefits than others.  You will want to choose the system that works best for you.  Asset tracking is only going to help with the container once it has been removed from the truck or drivers care.  Often when the goods are delivered the driver will remove the tracking device to bring it back with them.  Overall you will benefit from asset tracking because it lowers risk to you.
